In recent posts, everything about spending time outdoors in Bogue Chitto State Park was highlighted. You can read about BCSP here https://visitwashingtonparish.wordpress.com/2019/06/03/national-outdoors-month-at-bogue-chitto-state-park/ Also highlighted were the local U-Pick blueberry farms that are now open for the season, and you can review that here https://visitwashingtonparish.wordpress.com/2019/05/31/u-pick-blueberry-farms-in-washington-parish/
There are many other outdoor opportunities in Washington Parish. Here is another roundup. Links are provided so that you can click through to the web sites or social media pages for more information.
For fishing, if you have access to a boat, canoe or kayak, there are Bogue Chitto and Pearl Rivers, Bogue Lusa and Pushpetappa Creeks. Fishing is also available at Silver Creek campground in Mt Hermon, Berry Creek Cabins, Bogue Chitto Swamp Cabins. There may be some limited fishing at Zona ATV park, but it is not the primary activity there.
Silver Creek Campground located in Mt. Hermon offers RV & camper sites, and tent camping. Day passes are available for fishing or swimming in the creek or pool. Mudding events are held on atv trails. In June, the Redneck Cajun O’Limphicks are held Father’s Day weekend, and for the Silver Creek anniversary party in July, there’s the “woman-less” beauty pageant, “Miss Silver Creek”, always a vision of loveliness!
Berry Creek Cabins in the Enon community offers six themed cabins plus a houseboat, tailgate camper and vintage RV/Bus for rent. There is a large pavilion and party deck. There are three sites with covered RV hookups. Fishing, beach and swim pond, horseshoes and many other vacation games are available. River operators are also nearby. River Bend Campground is also in this area. If you do not have a camper of your own, J&D River Rentals can set you up an outfitted and delivered camper to either of two campgrounds in the area, River Bend or Bogue Chitto Canoeing. See Berry Creek website for more information on how to arrange this.
Bogue Chitto Swamp Cabins are also in the Enon area with river access/sandbar, stocked fishing pond, nature trails, fire pits, pavilion and playground. Join the birds in the trees in these elevated cabins.
Zona ATV Recreation Park is full of friendly family fun with trails, sand dunes, and mud bogs. There is a day beach with a Tarzan Boat that includes a gorilla bounce and jungle slide on the lake. A food grill is available, and there are limited camper/RV sites that must be reserved in advance. Music concerts are also held here frequently.
White Sand Lake Day Beach is an aqua park that includes a beach, water toys like trampolines, slides, and gyms. You can rent kayaks, stand up paddle boards and pedal boats. Cabanas and party rentals are also available.
Bogue Chitto Canoeing and Tubing is the oldest river operator in the Parish, now run by the second generation of the family. “Flo” down the river, but be careful of turning “Red” in the sun. Mrs. Flo was a character, and she and Mr. Red left the business in capable hands. Your choice of canoe, kayak, or tube is available and length of float varies from 1, 2, to 4 hours. There are some camping sites, including tent camping, at the facility.
In Bogalusa, Cassidy Park offers a walking trail, a splash pad area, and playground. A few blocks away, Goodyear Park also has a walking track and playground. Recently, the City paved a connecting path between the two parks. Walkers have always used the shade of Cassidy Park and Goodyear to get their steps in, and now they can expand the route and take in both. NOTE: Cassidy Park is not fully open since the last flooding incident. The splash pad remains closed at the moment, and the back part of the park as that sustained the most damage. The front area is open, the café and playground area. Next door to Goodyear is the Bogalusa YMCA, which offers public swim times for adults and children. The pool is scheduled to close at the end of July, but they are assessing interest and funding to keep it open through August. Finally, there is Pools Bluff south of Bogalusa. Here you find one of the boat launch areas, a walking trail with picnic area and gazebo, along with a Veteran’s Memorial. In Franklinton, the Washington Parish Fairgrounds have been employed as a walking track by many throughout the year with its park-like atmosphere.
There is no shortage of outdoor activities in Washington Parish. Get outside and enjoy.
